Wooden Stairs & Railings
Solid-wood staircases — open-tread, closed, floating — and hand-built balustrades. New builds, replacements, or full refinishing of an existing staircase.
Stairs are the loudest piece of millwork in a house. They are the first thing you see and the thing your hand touches the most. We build solid-wood staircases — open-tread, closed-riser, floating, steel-stringer-and-wood-tread hybrids — in white oak, walnut, and ash, with hand-formed brass, bronze or matte-black-steel railings. We also refinish existing stairs: sand back the worn old finish, repair loose treads and creaking risers, replace the railing, and re-oil the wood to a fresh hand-rubbed finish.
The specifics.
01
Solid hardwood treads
Thick rift-cut white oak, American black walnut, or ash on every visible tread. Hand-rubbed oil-and-wax finish that ages with the rest of the house.
02
Open, closed, floating
Open-tread cantilevered, closed-riser traditional, steel-stringer floating — we'll draw whichever the room is asking for, not whichever is easiest to build.
03
Hand-formed railings
Unlacquered brass, oil-rubbed bronze, or matte-black powder-coated steel paired with a solid-wood top rail. Hand-formed where the curves matter.
04
Refinishing as a stand-alone job
Worn staircase that doesn't need replacing? We sand, repair, re-tread where needed, replace the railing if you want, and re-finish on site. Quick wins.
